Racing News...
Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (October 22, 2010) – Albuquerque’s Derrik Ortega hadn’t made a Sprint Car start all year. The 19-year-old knocked the rust off in short order though by kicking off Canyon Speedway Park’s Hall of Fame Classic weekend with a strong drive to victory lane in Friday night’s 25-lap winged ASCS Southwest Region main event atop the semi-banked, 3/8-mile clay oval.
A Rocky Mountain Regional champion two years ago, Ortega took his fourth career American Sprint Car Series Regional feature win by racing to the stripe from the pole starting position after 17-year-old Dalten Gabbard broke a wing slider midway through the feature event.
While Ortega took the checkered flag aboard the family-owned No. 35, Gabbard held on for runner-up honors with two-time ASCS Southwest champion and current points leader Rick Ziehl taking the show position.
Calvin Landis was fourth and John Gaston rallied from 18th to round out the top five with the balance of the top ten including J.T. Imperial, R.J. Johnson, Lance Norick, Wes Wofford and Mike Rux, Jr.
Joshua Williams, Gabbard and Joshua Hodges topped Friday night’s heat race action.
PEORIA, Ariz. (September 25, 2010) – Charles Davis, Jr., collected his sixth American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region victory of the year by racing to victory lane in Saturday night’s 30-lap main event at Canyon Speedway Park.
Early in the feature Stevie Sussex took command with a charging Davis, Pelkey and RJ Johnson battling in tow. Sussex took a turn three end over end ride that sidelined his team for the night. Johnson fell victim to a mechanical problem that sent him to the pits.
The reigning series champion climbed forward from his seventh starting position aboard the Massey Motorsports No. 50 en route to his 20th career ASCS Canyon Region triumph.
Aside of banking the winners awards, Davis earned a 55-gallon drum of racing fuel gifted from Torco fuels.
Davis cross the stripe ahead of ABC Motorsports team driver Josh Pelkey with Ronnie Clark and Dalten Gabbard both advancing ten positions to finish third and fourth, respectively, after starting alongside in the seventh row.
Mike Martin rounded out the top five, with 19th-starter Bob Ream, Jr., Andrew Reinbold, Bruce St. James, Chris Bonneau and Justin Quinn completing the top ten.
Gabbard Tops ASCS Southwest in Winged Debut!
TUCSON, Ariz. (August 21, 2010) – Dalten Gabbard made the most of his winged Sprint Car debut by racing to victory lane in Saturday night’s 25-lap American Sprint Car Series Southwest Region feature event at USA Raceway.
A rookie contender with the wingless ASCS Canyon Region, the 17-year-old donned wings for the first time and charged past R.J. Johnson for the lead on the ninth circuit en route to victory lane aboard the Arizona Heat Trucking No. 77d.
